“Difference between bolts and screws” is a very common query for most, and can be easily answered with basic description of both. Fasteners are used to fasten two or more objects together in a joint. Bolts and Screws both belong to same family of fasteners. Bolts and Screws also perform similar function of fastening objects together, share similar characters, and also look very similar, but possess highly unique qualities of their own.

They both have their own purpose for applications and should be used with proper knowledge. Wrong identification of their application can result in huge error, specially in high-end applications.

Bolts

Bolt consist of a hexagonal head, a threaded cylindrical body and chiseled chamfer at the bottom. Bolts are generally used in combination with Nuts. Bolts Fasteners or Bolt usually consist of 3 sections, a head at top and chamfer at bottom joined by a long cylindrical shaft with helical ridge on outer side known as threads.  As the chamfer has beveled edges, it helps to slide the nut easily or even screwing the bolt into holes. Nuts are spun over this threads thus making it tight joint. Primary objective of bolt is to hold two or more objects together. They also help in positioning objects and making a joint stronger. Together the Bolt and nuts helps in resisting the loosening of joint due to vibrations or torque. Various types of nuts can be used with various types of bolts, thus adding a dynamic range to the joint as per the requirement of the material or conditions. Bolts are usually used in heavy-duty applications like – concrete, studs, beams, etc

Screws

Screws is a type of fastener which is very similar to bolts. Screws are made from various alloy. Screws are used to fasten components. Screws consist of a head part followed by a circular cylindrical body with external threads on it and a pointy end at bottom to pierce. They dig into and wedge into components when rotated. The thread cuts grove into the fastened component which helps pull fastened components together and avoid pull-outs. Variety of screws is available for different types of components, commonly used screws are wood, sheet metal and plastic screws. Screws are used in light to medium applications (plywood, pressboard, drywall, sheetmetal, deck planks, etc)

Features Of Bolts :-

1) Bolts are used in unison with washer and nuts.
2) Bolts have constant threaded body which provides greater strength.
3) Bolts posses higher holding strength due to threads on uniform threaded body.
4) Bolts do not cause any damage to the object as washer distributes the load uniformly and nut hold it in firm place.
5) Wrench is required to fit bolt with nut.
6) Bolts require washer and nuts to work.

Features of Screws :-

1) Screws are used independently.
2) Screws possess tapered body making it easy to drive in by tightening it with driver.
3) Screws can be used with existing threads or it can make its own thread by screwing withing the object.
4) Screw either requires a pilot-hole which need to be drilled within object thereby causing damage to object.
5) Screw-driver is required to drive screw inside.
6) Screw works on its own.

What Is Pipe ? http://www.hextubes.com/what-is-pipe/ Sun, 30 May 2021 18:45:16 +0000 http://www.hextubes.com/?p=10611

“What is pipe?” – Pipe is a cylindrical shaped hollow tubular structure which extends longitudinally. The round cross-section of pipe is hollow for the purpose so that it can allow conveyance of products flowing within it.

Primary purpose of a pipe is to carry the content flowing within, from one position to other. Pipes allows conveyance of content like – liquids, gasses, small solids or semi- solids, slurries, liquid gases, etc through it. Certain solid content can also be transferred with application of external force acting on them like gravity, hydraulics, extensions, air pressure guns, etc.

Pipes are applicable where there is demand for transport of various products from place A to place B in a leak-proof, smooth, damage-proof, contamination-proof manner protecting it from external environments. Pipes are generally used to transport products to longer distance and hence are used in series in piping system. At times pipe are required to be driven through contaminated zones, but its structure is such that it protects and prevents the content within from any kind of contamination surrounding it. As per the requirements, pipes can be manufactured in various grades providing the necessary features demanded by the application.

Due to its circular structure, it can withstand extremely high pressure acting on it externally as well as internally. Thus, its robust shape provides a strong environment for content within.

Pipes are available in various forms like seamless pipes, welded pipes, erw pipes, etc. and are further available in various shapes like round pipe, square pipe, rectangle pipe, etc.
Most popular pipes are decorative pipes, sanitary pipes, polish pipes, instrumentation pipes, heat exchanger pipes, bright annealing pipes, etc.

ASME Standards

American Society of Mechanical Engineers, ASME

ASTM International (2001) formerly known as American Society for Testing and Materials founded in 1898. ASTM represents quality for materials to be used in products which are described in ASME. ASTM International is one of the largest voluntary standards developing organizations in the world. ASTM International is a not-for-profit organization that provides a forum for the development and publication of voluntary standards for materials, products, systems, and services. More than 12,000 standards are used globally and the more than 30,000 members belonging to one or more committees, representing consumers, users, producers and government from over 140 countries, covering a subject area such as steel, petroleum, medical devices, property management, consumer products, and many more.

ASTM International’s member develop technical documents grounding manufacturing, management, procurement, codes, and regulations. The manifestation of this standard means the material was subjected to a mechanical test determining its yield strength, tensile strength, Brinell hardness and elongation. ASTM articulate that international standardization can be more effective through the support of sector-driven standards and observance of basic principles of standards development. For a full publication of these standards yearly, there is the Annual Book of ASTM Standards for industries like geothermal energy, medicine, environment and electrical and cover items like plastics, adhesives, textiles and more.

ASME is one of the oldest standards-developing organizations in America. ASME is an American Organizational set up, to guide, monitor and work on betterment of mechanical engineering and relevant multi-disciplinary engineering through codes and standards. ASME standards represents the dimensions and tolerances with respect to each material class. ASME developed approximately 600 codes and standards covering many technical areas, such as fasteners, plumbing fixtures, elevators, pipelines, and power plant systems and components.

Many ASME standards are cited by government agencies as tools to meet their regulatory objectives. ASME’s standards are used in more than 100 countries and have been translated into numerous languages. Founded as an engineering society focused on mechanical engineering in North America, ASME is today multidisciplinary and global. ASME has over 140,000 members in 158 countries worldwide.

Duplex Stainless Steel Can Be A Good Choice For Your Project ! http://www.hextubes.com/duplex-stainless-steel-can-be-a-good-choice-for-your-project/ Wed, 27 Jul 2016 09:30:10 +0000 http://localhost/duplex2205-local/?p=1

Duplex Stainless Steel

Duplex 2205 also known as Duplex Stainless Steel or 2205 Stainless Steel is a corroded metal with a combination of ferritic steel and austenitic steel. 2205 Duplex contains 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, 5 to 6% nickel used extensively in applications that require good corrosion resistance & strength. The lower nickel content of the Duplex grades means a better thermal conductivity as compared to the austenitic equivalent grade. These low nickel alternates offer far more stable pricing compared to the higher nickel austenitic alloys. Duplex Steel provides superior protection against corrosion than most grades of stainless steel in the majority of environments. The most widely used stainless steel is Duplex 2205. The use of duplex stainless steel has grown and is a popular choice for a number of reasons including its price stability and higher strength. Duplex stainless steels are low nickel bearing stainless steels that offer many mechanical and corrosion resistant benefits over more popular 300 series stainless steels. Welding the Duplex Stainless Steels seems easy if the only criteria is passing ASME code. Replacement of expensive Nickel with Nitrogen gives several advantages, including enhanced tensile properties and greater resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, and they are twice the strength of 300 Series of Stainless Steel. Their lighter weight also makes duplex stainless steels cheaper to transport and assemble. 2205 duplex stainless steel is a more common duplex stainless that offers corrosion resistance between 317/L and the 6% Mo alloys.
